Abstract: Twenty potato genotypes were grown in three experiments under optimal water supply (cc), early (sc), late (cs) and long-term (ss) drought stress in bigbag containers under variable light conditions in the polytunnel screenhouse of the MPI of Molecular Plant Physiology at Potsdam-Golm, Germany ((52°23′55″ N 13°3′56″ E). Meteorological conditions were continuously measured on a weather station next to the experiment. Soil water content and temperature were measured with PlantCare™ soil sensors every 60 min. Plants were irrigated with an injector-drip irrigation system with defined water volumes every three to four days. Plants on stress treatment received water with half the frequency of the optimally watered plants. Shoot development was monitored with two Planteye F400 laser scanners mounted on an automobile Fieldscan device. The system yielded six 3d-point clouds per day for each plant. Data were subsequently evaluated with the Hortcontrol software, which estimated plant height, digital biomass, leaf area, projected leaf area, leaf area index, light penetration depth, leaf angle and leaf inclination. At a thermal time of approximately 1400 °CD, the haulm was removed and tubers were harvested. Tuber number in three size groups, tuber fresh weight and starch yield were determined for each plant.
